First, let’s start with the definitions.
What does “Reach” mean on Instagram insights?
According to Instagram, “Account Reach” means:
“The number of unique accounts that have seen your post, at least once.”
Simply put:
One reach = one person.
Two reach = 2 people.
And so on.
So if you see your Reach is 2,000, it means 2,000 people saw your post.
What does “Impressions” mean on Instagram?
Here is what Instagram says Impressions mean:
“Reach is different from impressions. Impressions may include multiple views of your posts by the same account”.
Simply put:
One person checked your post twice = 2 impressions.
If you want to get more specific = 1 Reach (one person) + 2 impressions (because he checked the post twice).
What’s the difference between reach and impressions on Instagram?
Based on these definitions, this is how you can tell the difference between Reach and Impressions on Instagram:
Reach is the total number of people who saw your post.
Impressions is how many times your post was seen by the same account.

What about Reach and Impressions on Instagram Story?
What’s the difference between reach and impressions on Instagram Story?
It is the same logic as for Instagram posts.
One Reach = one person saw your Story.
2 Reach = two people saw your Story.
If the same person watches the same Story twice = 2 impressions
That’s it!
